more drug raids

A woman and four men were arrested yesterday in Nakasi following a joint raid by officers from the Police Dog Unit and Fiji Detector Dog Unit. Assistant Commissioner of Police – Operations, (ACP) Livai Driu said the raid was a result of information gathered of alleged illegal activities taking place at the residence.

The team upon arrival at the residence executed a search warrant whereby K9 Ike was deployed and gave an initial indication of illicit drugs. ACP Driu said the team searched a box and found several zip lock bags containing white crystals believed to be methamphetamine.

A further search conducted inside the house led to the discovery of more plastics containing white crystals believed to be methamphetamine. All suspects were taken into custody at the Nakasi Police Station, and the seized substances sent for analysis.

The Assistant Commissioner for Operations said this past week, several men and women were produced in court for the unlawful possession of illicit drugs of both white and green drugs throughout the five policing divisions.

With the school holidays approaching and the already mounting concerns on the involvement of children in drug related activities, the Fiji Police Force with the assistance of partner law enforcement agencies are targeting those distributing and selling drugs.

“Those involved don’t care what happens to others, they only care about filling their pockets. The school holidays are coming up and we cannot rule out children being targeted and enticed to get involved in pushing drugs as a means of earning a quick dollar”.

“Officers have been visiting schools, meeting with teachers who will be bringing students to Suva, impressing on the need for supervision and constant reminders to be issued to students”. ACP Driu is also appealing with parents and guardians not to let their guards down. “Keep talking to your children.

We must remain vigilant and keep talking not only to our children, but to each other as parents and guardians, and be aware of what they are doing and who they are spending their time with”.

ACP Driu said drug operations have been focused on drug raids at the main ports of entry as there is a likelihood of increased movement of illicit drugs from the maritime Islands.

????The Fiji Detector Dog Unit (FDDU) is a partnership between the Fiji Police Force, Fiji Revenue and Customs Service supported by New Zealand Police l and New Zealand Customs working together to stop the flow of illicit drugs locally and into the country, by strengthening partnerships between border agencies and law enforcement.
