Child abuse cases a worry

The Fiji Police Force is warning parents and guardians to exercise due care when it comes to the discharge of their roles and responsibilities as primary care and welfare providers for their children.

The Acting Commissioner of Police Juki Fong Chew said a second case of alleged child abuse has surfaced, whereby a young girl was allegedly assaulted by her mother whilst drunk, resulting in her sustaining injuries.

The 43-year old woman has been charged with one count of Act with intent to cause bodily harm and will be produced at the Nasinu Magistrates Court tomorrow.

The Acting Commissioner of Police reiterates that all reports and investigations of cases of child abuse and victimisation will be prioritised, emphasis on ensuring those responsible are brought to justice.

The Acting Commissioner says child abuse is a community issue and everyone shares responsibility in dealing with the matter.

The Fiji Police Force is reiterating that the welfare of a child is of paramount importance, and is warning parents and guardians to act in the best interests of their children at all times.

The Acting Commissioner says corporal punishment is illegal and a crime and Police will come down hard on those that are involved in the ill-treatment, abuse and any activity that is of potential harm to a child’s welfare, health and well-being.
