GFH Strategic Direction

Conversations and the sharing of achievable and realistic activities for the successful implementation of the Pacific Islands Chiefs of Police Gender Family Harm (GFH) Strategic Direction dominated discussions on Day two of the PICP Gender and Family Harm regional workshop.

The purpose of the workshop held at the Tanoa International Hotel, Nadi Fiji is to bring together all GFH Programme Managers and leads from across PICP member countries, to discuss and map a way forward in implementing the PICP GFH Programme with technical support provided from the Pacific-Community-SPC.

SPC’s Team Leader Monitoring Evaluation and Learning, Jose Antonio said it was imperative for PICP member countries to come up with achievable short term activities and outputs that were realistic, whilst capturing the essence of the two Pillars of the PICP GFH Strategic Direction, of Ownership and Partnerships.

Meanwhile Ms Mereseini Rakuita the SPC's Principal Strategic Lead Pacific Women Lead said, “The implementation comes down to ownership, what does ownership look like in the context of your police force. How does your policy and processes reflect the aspirations of the strategic direction”.

“Partnerships and collaboration is needed, it's great, but the power of the collaboration is only good, if your policies, procedures and processes reflect the same aspirations of the strategic direction. There are great examples in this room that can be coined in a way, providing leverage in the implementation of your strategic direction”.

Niue Chief of Police and Executive lead of the PICP Family Harm Programme echoed similar sentiments during the deliberations adding, that while a lot was being said about addressing training and awareness it was important to remain realistic and understand that addressing GBV and Gender Family Harm may take some time as it was about changing mindsets and behaviour, and activities and outputs must ensure a whole of society approach and not just from the policing perspective.

The workshop continues today.
