Man charged for Rape

A 37-year-old man will be produced at the Labasa Magistrates Court tomorrow charged with raping his 12-year-old niece who fell pregnant as a result of the alleged incident.

The victim has been staying with the accused and her grandmother since her parents passed away.

The accused after allegedly committing the offence sometime in October last year had warned her not to tell anyone.

The matter came to light when the victim complained of having a stomach ache and was taken to the Seaqaqa Health Station where the pregnancy was confirmed.

The victim was placed in the care of Fiji Women's Crisis Centre staff.

The accused has been charged with rape and will be produced at the Labasa Magistrates Court tomorrow.

In another case of alleged rape, two men are in custody at the Sigatoka Police Station after allegedly raping a 16-year-old student yesterday.

The suspects, a 32-year old farmer and 26-year old mechanic had allegedly offered to drop the victim home, but instead took her to where the group were drinking alcohol.

They allegedly forced her to drink alcohol following which the offence was committed.

The two suspects are in custody while the search continues for the third suspect.
