Training on Maritime Capabilities

The Fiji Police Force continues to train its officers as it prepares to receive up to six-million dollars worth of specialized maritime capabilities from the Government of Japan through the Japan International Cooperation System.

In 2018 the Government of Japan as part of its strengthened support towards Fiji’s development committed to equipping the Fiji Police Force with Maritime Safety and Security equipment, valued at close to $6 million under its Economic Social Development Programme (ESDP).

Earlier this week discussions were held between Mr Taisuke Iwano the Japanese Embassy First Secretary of Development Cooperation, Mr Peni Saurara Japanese Embassy’s Economic Research and Aid Coordinator and Fiji Police’s Director International Relations Senior Superintendent of Police (SSP) Ulaiasi Ravula and Assistant Superintendent of Police (ASP) Ulaiasi Tamanisau on online training conducted to date and the official handing expected to take place next month.

The assistance is expected to improve the Fiji Police Force’s coast guard capacity by providing lifeboats and other maritime safety equipment, which can be used for search rescue efforts in coastal areas when the disaster strikes while positively impacting Fiji’s disaster prevention and mitigation efforts.

The specialized maritime equipment include rescue boats, underwater cameras, underwater communication equipment to name a few.

SSP Ravula said the Fiji Police was grateful that the training was able to be conducted amidst the challenges brought about by COVID-19.

“The Fiji Police is often looked upon to provide immediate assistance in disaster response because we are Government’s most decentralized agency and are spread throughout the Fiji group".

“Our officers have been receiving online training and we are grateful to the Japanese Government for meeting our needs in the provision of these important maritime assets”.

Mr Iwano reassured the Fiji Police of his Government’s commitment in ensuring the equipment was delivered with the training as it placed great value in strengthening maritime security.

The handing over is expected to take place early next month.
