Lami stakeholders got together this morning to clean up from the Kalekana to Lami Town corridors.
The Fiji Police Force, the National Fire Authority, the Lami Town Council, friends, families along with the main organizers, the Eco Guardians of Fiji were all part of today’s program.
The program organizer, the retired German Air Force Captain, Rainer Hoehn said people will need to think seriously of protecting their environment.
“It’s sad to see motorist throwing their rubbish on the roads and this has become a norm. This is a beautiful country but people continue to pollute it every day,” said Capt Hoehn.
The Eco Guardians of Fiji was established last year with the main aim of protecting our natural resources from pollution.
This is the first program organized this year and according to Capt Hoehn, there are few more similar activities planned.
Divisional Manager for Community Policing South (DMCP/S) Superintendent of Police (SP) Ruci Nasemira said this is one of the initiative that the Police will support.
SP Ruci said they are involving a lot of children in order to spread the word on pollution.
“They are cleaning up today and next time they will try to litter, they will think of the efforts done today in trying to clear off all rubbish from the roadsides. We are hoping that they will spread the word on today’s activity to their parents and friends,” said SP Ruci.
One of the initiative done today was the collection of old tires from the beach by the young people and the Eco Guardians of Fiji paid five dollars for every tire collected.
The program this morning ended with fun and games for the children along with entertainment from the Fiji Police Dance Band.
