Fatal Road Accidents

Speeding and pedestrians at fault are the leading causes of road fatalities to date, reinforcing the message that road safety is a shared responsibility as the national road death toll stands at 51 compared to 20 for the same period last year.

Analyzing the 51 fatalities and its contributing factors;

22 cases linked to speeding

12 cases were pedestrians at fault (inclusive of cases were pedestrians were heavilyintoxicated)

7 cases due to dangerous driving

4 cases as a result of drunk and drive

2 cases of hit and run

2 cases of improper overtaking

2 cases of driver fatigue

The Western Division has recorded the highest number of fatalities;

West - 24 fatalities

South - 16 fatalities

North - 6 fatalities

East - 5 fatalities

As we head into the last six months of the year, we are pleading with all road users to cooperate with stakeholders in adopting a change of mindset, in that speed limits and road rules should be adhered to at all times, and not only when police are present.

By continuously disregarding road rules in the absence of Police or other law enforcement agencies, you develop a dangerous habit of being complacent which will lead to serious accidents or fatalities.
