Day 1 of Gender and Family Harm Workshop


Day one of the regional Pacific Islands Chiefs of Police Gender and Family Harm Workshop co-facilitated by the Pacific-Community-SPC ended with increased awareness of where the PICP Gender Family Harm Programme fits in with regional and international commitments that support gender equality and efforts towards ending Gender Based violence.

The session saw SPC's Team Leader Governance and Institutional Strengthening, Neomai Maravuakula and Human Rights Advisor William Nainima talk about how Police play a vital role in developing key priority actions aligned to respective national, regional, international legislative and policy documents focused on people centre development.

Ms Maravuakula while outlining the 2050 Strategy for the Blue Pacific Continent, Pacific Leaders Gender Equality Declaration (PLGED), Boe Declaration on Regional Security, Pacific Platform for Action on Women’s Human Rights (PPA) said, “Our leaders aspire for communities to be safe. We have an interest to help all parties, because when you bring to life the PICP Gender and Family Harm Strategic Direction, it is not going to be done in isolation, but linked to the regional documents''.

SPC Human Rights Advisor William Nainima outlined a number of issues pertaining to the handling of Gender Based Violence cases, shedding more light on how actions are detrimental towards promoting safe spaces for GBV victims to seek help.

PICP’s Executive Coordinator and Gender and Family Harm (GFH) Team Manager Loretta Hunt-Tevaga and Niue Police Chief and the Executive Lead for the PICP Gender Family Harm Programme Chief Tim Wilson, ASP Ulaiasi Tamanisau and Tonga Police's Anamalia A'ho' spoke about how the role of the PICP and the expectations of member countries in the implementation of its GFH Strategic Direction 2021 -2024.

The day ended with the participants from the 16 member countries sharing their experiences and challenges of addressing GBV.

In attendance are law enforcement officers from Tonga Police, Australian Federal Police, Kiribati Police Service, Cook Islands Police Service, New Zealand Police Vanuatu Police Force, Samoa Police, Prisons & Corrections Services, Fiji Police Force, Nauru Police Force, Bureau of Public Safety, Palau, Marshall Islands Police Department, Niue Police Department - Faahi Gahua Leoleo ha Niue, Tuvalu police service, RSIPF, CNMI Department of Public Safety, Haut-Commissariat de la République en Nouvelle-Calédoniem.
