Opening of New Fiji Police Dog Unit Facility

The new Fiji Police Dog Unit facility was officially opened today by the Minister for Home Affairs & Immigration Hon. Pio Tikoduadua marking a new chapter for the specialized Unit that has grown since its humble beginnings on the 27th April, 1961.

The original Police Dog Kennel was opened in 1961 by the then Governor of Fiji, Sir Kenneth Maddock at the same site which was funded by the British Overseas Development Fund in building the capability and capacity of the then Royal Fiji Police prior to Fiji gaining independence in 1970.

Today's event also marked the official handing over of 10 trained police dogs from H.E. Charlotte Darlow New Zealand's High Commissioner to Fiji.

Signifying yet another milestone in their 62 year partnership, the 10 dogs and handlers were trained at the New Zealand Police (NZP) Dog Training Centre in Trentham supported under the NZP/FPF Partnership Program from 2022 to date.

Members of the diplomatic corps, friendly forces, retired officers and wives of fallen K9 officers were present to witness the opening ceremony in Nasese.
