Southern Wins Commissioners Cup Challenge

“You have to remember that while you are striving to bring pride to your various Divisions by winning this Cup, and that is appreciated, our overall objective or goal, is to win the Sukuna Bowl this year.”

These were the words of the Commissioner of Police, Brigadier General Sitiveni Qiliho said as he handed over the Commissioners Cup to the new champions Southern Division this afternoon.

He added that despite the strong rivalries between the various Police Divisions during the Cup Challenge they should bring out their best, and highest competative spirit when challenging the Sukuna Bowl.

Meanwhile, a strong comeback in the dying minutes of the Commissioners Cup challenge at Nasova Grounds this afternoon, by the defending champions, Central Division, was not enough to secure them a win against a more determined Southern brigade.

From the first whistle in the kickoff of the first half, Southern Division went on the attack and stunned the Central Division defense, with a converted score at the opening 5 minutes of the match.

Southern Division kept adding on pressure on the Central Division defense and saw them lead 27 – 10 at the break.

The second half of the match saw Central Division reviving their tempo but indiscipline cost them greatly, as Southern Division converted 2 penalties to increase their lead to 33 – 10.

Two late tries by Central Division together with a converted penalty kick was still not enough to put them in the lead as Southern Division won 33-27.

The Final Challenger for the Commissioners Cup will Police Special Response Unit (PSRU) next week on Wednesday (21/09/22).
