Memorial Day for Sadhu Kuppuswamy

The Fiji Police Force today joined Nasinu Sangam Primary School as they celebrated the life of their founder, Sadhu Kuppuswamy.

Sadhu Kuppuswamy was an indentured laborer who had encouraged his fellow laborers from South India to form an organization to help promote their culture and language in Fiji.

He then became the founder and first president of the Then India Sanmarga Ikya Sangam in 1926.

Deputy Commissioner of Police (DCP) Itendra Nair acknowledged the school for allowing the Fiji Police Force to be part of their celebration.

He said the literature of Patron Saint Kuppuswamy’s life teaches some valuable lessons which also made him a legend in history.

“Most of you only recall COVID 19 as a significant pandemic that horrified and stunned the world, but in 1918, Fiji was struck by influenza.

Our Patron Swamy provided significant relief by taking the sick to the hospital—a little deed that always goes a long way.”

The Deputy Commissioner reminded the students to take advantage of the every chance available to help others.

DCP Nair said he is proud of the fact that the Patron Saint was a Police Officer in India before he arrived in Fiji in the 1910s as an indentured labourer.

“Policing is a profession where from the protection of life and property and through community policing we try to be proactive in the prevention of crime.

Our focus is to avoid crime and criminal activities from occurring.

This is also an essence of Sevaka Ratnam Sadhu Kuppuswamy legacy.”
