Officers from the Cybercrime, Prosecutions, Narcotics Bureau and Financial Intelligence Unit attended a training focused on Crypto Curriculum and the basics of the logic behind Crypto and how it is used today.
The UNODC Cryptocurrencies and Darknet Investigations Training Course was facilitated by the UNODC - United Nations Office on Drugs and Crime (UNODC) Cybercrime Division and supported by U.S. Embassy Suva Cryptocurrency is a form of virtual asset based on a network that is distributed across a large number of computers.
This decentralised structure allows them to exist outside the control of governments and central authorities, making it vital for law enforcement officers to be well-versed with possible criminal threats conducted online.
The training also focused on the use of Darknet Markets and Marketplaces as it is fast becoming an ideal environment for a wide range of criminal activities.
According to the UNODC, just as new threats appear on the Clearnet (i.e. the regular Internet), darknets can facilitate similar attacks that provide perpetrators with a greater degree of anonymity.
This anonymity makes investigation and prevention more challenging, but still possible.
The training also gave the officers the opportunity to put into practice the use of Open Source Intelligence Tools for information gathering.
