Review of the Fiji Police Act meeting


The Validation of the findings on the Review of the Fiji Police Act is being held today at the Grand Pacific Hotel in Suva.

Minister for Policing Honourable Ioane Naivalurua MP while opening the meeting for the senior management of the Fiji Police Force stressed on the importance of today’s deliberation towards having a Police Act that is relevant, people focused and aligned with international norms and Government’s intent.

The meeting was supported by the United Nations Human Rights Office and United Nations Development Program.

Regional Representative of the Office of the UN High Commissioner for Human Rights Ms. Heike Alefsen said, “Reforming the Police Act is not only about law - it is about trust and building confidence in the police. It is about ensuring that every Fijian, in every community, can look to the Police with confidence and know that their rights will be respected and protected no matter what.”

The review team consisted of officials from the Office of the Solicitor General, Ministry of Policing, and? supported by the UN Human Rights Office, UNDP and UN Women.

The new legislation is expected to be presented to Parliament soon for approval, replacing the current 1965 Police Act.
