Leadership training opening

Leadership experts from the College of Policing are completing the last of the series of leadership trainings with the executive leaders of the Fiji Police Force.

The training is being held at the Nakasi Police Station, and was officially opened by the British High Commissioner to Fiji, His Excellency Dr Brian Jones.

Attending the training are Assistant Commissioners, Directors, Divisional Police Commanders and emerging leaders.

Dr. Jones emphasised the British Government’s commitment in providing support to the Fiji Police Force in various aspects of policing, particularly in leadership training.

“We don’t intend to tell you how to be leaders, you are already there, delivering that role. We have conducted training for the junior and middle leaders, and as the senior executive, connecting the generation of leaders is vital.”

Dr Jones also talked about the level of responsibility bestowed on any individual assuming a leadership role.

“It is an exciting time to be a leader, but with the responsibility comes scrutiny. Scrutiny will remain and we must get used to being visible and leaders under the microscope.”

Drawing from his civil engineering background, the British High Commissioner to Fiji said an important analogy that can be drawn from structural engineering is the definition of integrity.

“With structural engineering, the definition of integrity is a beam or a unit that will not bend or break or form when placed under extreme pressure. As leaders, people must be able to see us in that we truly hold value, and not be easily bent when placed under significant pressure.”

Dr. Jones said the UK in Fiji stands ready to assist with other capability training, specifically in the field of digital cyber forensics.

The training ends on Wednesday.
