K9 capabilities in war on drugs

The deployment of K9 capabilities continue as Operations Yavirau ramps up its efforts of disrupting the illicit drug trade and associated crimes.

Assistant Commissioner of Police – Operations (ACP-O) Livai Driu said snap checks and searches were conducted with the help of the Fiji Detector Dog Unit and Police Dog Unit, leading to seizures of both white and green drugs.

ACP Driu said aside from the teams focused on the special operations, officers on routine duties would also conduct snap searches on individuals found to be acting in a suspicious manner.

“We are recording arrests all throughout Fiji and in the past 48-hour period arrests were made in Suva, Lakeba, Nanuku Settlement, Lami, Lautoka in the main city area, Nausori Highland Road, and Tukavesi.”

“A number of arrests and seizures were made possible through the joint deployment and snap checks conducted by the FDDU and Police Dog Unit while others were as a result of information and intelligence gathering”.

ACP Driu said more than 10 people were arrested and taken into custody as investigations continue.
