Meet Acting Corporal Epeli Lewenilovo the officer that was the Mace Bearer in Parliament this week.

Originally from the chiefly village of Somosomo in Taveuni, A/Cpl Lewenilovo has maternal links to the chiefly island of Bau in Tailevu.

A/Cpl Lewenilovo is a member of Totogo Police Station, Parliament Duties Unit, is currently one of four officers in the Unit that carry out the Mace Bearer duties, during Parliament Sittings.

A/Cpl Lewenilovo says the most important thing about being a Mace Bearer is to be physically fit and mentally focused.

“During parliament sittings, the Mace Bearer must be focused and remain alert at all times.

The Mace Bearer will only take his cue to move, from the Speaker of the House,” he said.

“So it’s very important for officers to sleep well and be prepared when carrying out the Mace Bearer duties,” he added Educated at Savusavu Secondary School.

A/Cpl Lewenilovo joined the Fiji Police Force as a recruit in 2014.

The 29-year-old father of 2 is married to Nina Tuiseke from the beautiful island of Rotuma.

He is the middle child in a family of 3 siblings, and has served on training attachment basis in various units at Totogo Police Station, including the Traffic Unit, Criminal Investigations Department, Police Community Post, Charge Room, Enquiry Unit and Judges Orderly.

In 2017 he was transferred on a full time basis to the Parliament Duties Unit.

He said when there is no Parliament Sitting, members of his unit sit in during Parliament Committee Meetings as well as other routine policing duties.
