Police Constable Uraia Ratu originally from Naisaumua Village, Verata, Tailevu was commended for his commitment to the call of duty when he managed to apprehend two men who were wanted for arrest while he was off duty.
The officer was travelling with his wife in a minibus when a group message alert was received on his phone of the search efforts underway for two men that same morning.
PC Ratu who is based at the Nasinu Police Station said he was surprised to see the two travelling in the same minibus.
He realized that he had to act quickly to try and keep them from escaping.
Realizing that he was in a confined space with his wife and the driver, he knew the only way to prevent any innocent party from getting hurt was to calmly talk to the two and convince them to surrender themselves.
PC Ratu said he used the knowledge gained from the recent Customer Service Training to convince the two to give themselves up which they eventually agreed to.
With the assistance of the minibus driver, the two were safely escorted to the Korovou Police Station where they were arrested and escorted back to Nabua.
Chief Operations Officer ACP Abdul Khan while presenting the young officer a Certificate of Commendation on behalf of the Acting Commissioner Rusiate Tudravu earlier this week commended PC Ratu’s dedication to the call of duty and in staying true to the motto that Police officers are never off duty.
Meanwhile in Lautoka Chief of Intelligence and Investigations ACP Biu Matavou awarded a Certificate of Commendation to PC Jioji Lagi for his actions which led to the arrest of a man who had allegedly robbed a woman last month.
