The collaboration arrangements between the Fiji Police Force and the Republic of Fiji Military Forces (RFMF) in the execution of major drug operations has been ongoing, an option explored only if there is an imminent threat to police officers.
The arrangements have effectively achieved the intent of major drug operations resulting in seizures and arrests.
We appreciate the reassurance by the Minister for Defence and Veteran Affairs, Honourable Pio Tikoduadua of the RFMF’s readiness to assist upon the request of the FPF.
However, while this is not the case for all drug cases, if intelligence points to a potential security threat where our officers will need protection, only then will we seek the assistance of the RFMF.
At present this working arrangement has worked out well, based on mutual trust and respect and in accordance with the law.
We would like to also reiterate that the Fiji Police Force based on current threat assessments does not need to arm its officers.
We are however continuously assessing trends and potential security threats within the region and will explore the option in due course.
The Fiji Police Force is also looking at strengthening its proactive measures rather than just focusing on reactiveness, as this is the way forward.
While the arrests are made, it is important to look at the root causes and answer the why part of the equation.
We call on non-government organisations and communities to work with Police and stakeholders in addressing the rise in drug related activities and find practical solutions that will protect our young generation from the temptation of drugs.
By removing the demand element, we can reduce supply which is why we need to equally focus our attention on proactive measures.
