As leaders, you need to be strategic thinkers, with a broad overview of all issues impacting security.
This was the message relayed by the Commissioner of Police Rusiate Tudravu whilst addressing officers attending the Superintendent Qualifying Course, co-facilitated by the Australian Institute of Police Management and the Fiji Police Academy.
Commissioner Tudravu was invited to speak about his personal experiences in rising up the ranks in the hope of inspiring the crop of future leaders of the organisation.
“We have gone through many good and tough times, different leadership styles that have somewhat impacted policing over the years. As career police officers, we know policing, we know what needs to be done, and as leaders, you need to be firm with your decisions at all times.”
“Self-empowerment and learning is an important lesson I learned early on in my career, to end what we in the Pacific often face, self-doubt. We often look down on ourselves and our abilities when in a room full of our comrades from advanced nations and larger policing jurisdictions, but once you have the knowledge backed by education, you can shine in any situation.”
The AIPM team is assisting the Fiji Police Academy in delivering the training and has introduced a scenario training e-learning platform that simulates any work environment.
The Commissioner thanked the AIPM and Australian Federal Police for the continued support and for coming up with new learning techniques aided by technology.
He ended his session by stressing, “As a leader, trust is important as you will be making decisions based on briefings given by your team, and therefore, nurturing trust amongst your team is very important. Empower your officers, as you do not have all the answers. Don’t be a leader that is threatened by others' success, but rather empower others to realise their potential so they can contribute to achieving the overall intent of the organisation.”
“As the head of the Fiji Police Force, my intent is to empower and groom you as future leaders. I want to ensure that we have a pool of career police officers that we can choose from to take up senior leadership positions and the Commissioner’s post.”
The Fiji Police Force collaborates with the Australian Institute of Police Management (AIPM) through the Pacific Faculty of Policing (PFP) where leadership development opportunities are tailor made for middle managers and senior executives, aiming to enhance leadership capabilities and address emerging security threats in the region.
