The Eastern Division Headquarters along with the Nakasi Police Station today joined stakeholders in the launch of the 16 days activism against domestic violence.
The program started with a procession from Nakasi Police Station to Rups Mega Complex where key note speakers took turns to talk about Domestic Violence.
The Deputy Divisional Police Commander Eastern (DDPC/E), Superintendent of Police (SP) Uraia Davu has urged everyone in attendance to support the theme “Break the silence and end the violence.”
For this, SP Davu said we need to understand our roles and take action. “The theme shouldn’t be just another slogan, but it needs our action and we all have a part to play.
We need to end that mindset of silence which had seen so many of our women suffer in the past,” said SP Davu. He reminded everyone that a home should be a safe haven filled with love but that is usually not the case.
“Yet to many homes are filled with pain, fear and silence. The silence will allow the violence to continue and sometimes it escalates to a life being lost.”
As a carrier Police Officer, he adds sometimes domestic violence cases goes unreported for months or years and he has urged everyone that silence can never be the solution.
He said that people need to have the courage to speak up against Domestic Violence so that it will allow Police to do its work in protecting the victims and ensuring that justice takes its course.
