Acting Commissioner of Police issues reminder

The recent allegations of misconduct against Police officers, has prompted the Acting Commissioner of Police to reissue a warning that no one is above the law, reaffirming his intent on holding officers accountable for their actions.

Acting Commissioner of Police Juki Fong Chew continued his Divisional tour of the five policing districts in the Central Division yesterday, where he spoke to officers based at the Totogo Police Station and affiliated Community Posts.

The Acting Commissioner reminded the officers that due processes will be followed when a report is received, however the rippling effects it will have are devastating, especially for the officer’s families.

“The Office of the DPP issues monthly statistics on police officers who have been charged, and the past few weeks we have seen a number of our own charged, and it is frustrating, as we should be enforcing and following the law, not breaking it”.

“If you’re involved in any corrupt practices, think twice because issues will surface, due processes will be followed and you will go home with half or no pay and your families will suffer.

If you’re found guilty in a court of law and sentenced, that’s the end of your career”.

Acting Commissioner Chew made reference to a number of incidents where police officers were charged or sentenced, saying it was unacceptable for police officers to be involved in any form of corrupt practices, and that allegations were not only harmful to the reputation of the organization but the officers’ families.

“A number of police officers have been charged for reports that had been lodged a few years back, as sanctioned by the Office of the DPP.

This shows our commitment to addressing these issues head on, because our actions and behavior towards our work is essential to restoring public support”.

The Acting head of the organization did not mince his words stressing that he would not hesitate to direct disciplinary action against an officer if an official report is lodged and investigations initiated either for conduct or a criminal case.

“You and I can be replaced, and the Fiji Police Force will continue to exist, so reassess your purpose as a police officer.

Let’s Restore Blue first internally by getting things right, addressing the wrongs, because only then will we be able to win support and restore public support”.

Acting Commissioner Chew called on the officers to continue working through the negative issues, as the best way to win back confidence and trust in policing was to produce results through the honest conduct of policing duties.

“Majority of the complaints received regarding service delivery can be addressed through a change in mindset, change in attitude, and understanding that we will not be here forever.

So think about your children, your spouses and your family who have sacrificed so much for you”.
