JAPAN POLICE VISIT


A Japanese Police delegation visited the Acting Commissioner Juki Fong Chew on Wednesday last week.

Led by their Director of International Affairs, Assistant Commissioner Ishii Ryu and accompanied by senior officials from the Japan International Cooperation Agency (JICA) in Tokyo and Suva, the team visited the Fiji Police Force (FPF) Headquarters to hold bilateral discussions.

The visit was to improve cooperation between the two Police Forces, focusing on common areas such as cyber-crime, community policing, drug trade in the region and providing training opportunities for the FPF.

During the meeting, Acting Commissioner of Police Mr Chew expressed the FPF’s appreciation for the ongoing support from the Japanese government.

He specifically acknowledged the Japanese government's assistance in enhancing the FPF's maritime capabilities for activities such as search and rescue, drug operations, coastal patrols, and disaster response.

Emerging cyber-crime trends on dark web market places was also discussed and the evolving cybersecurity threats related to cryptocurrency exploitation. Both agencies emphasized the need for joint capabilities to counter growing threats.

The Japanese Police delegation commended FPF’s integrated presence in local communities. The delegation also had the opportunity to visit the Fiji Police Academy, selected community posts in the Central Division, and the Police Mobile Force.
