“You are called to serve the nation, the people of Fiji, not your household, not your families, not because you are from Vanualevu or the western side, no, you are here for the people of Fiji”.
A stern reminder issued by the Methodist Church of Fiji President Reverend Dr. Semisi Turagavou during the Fiji Police’s Thanksgiving Church service marking the end of the Festive season operational period and the Induction service for the Force Chaplain, Assistant Superintendent of Police Reverend Joeli Mawi held at the Fiji Police Academy in Nasova.
The second quarter Church service was an opportunity for the organization to give thanks and acknowledge operational efforts during the busy festive months of December and January.
Reverend Dr. Turagavou while delivering his sermon reminded the officers of their purpose as members of the policing profession, stressing the importance of having the right attitude. “You must serve and give your whole life, dedicate your life, sacrifice your life, and be the servant of this nation.
You must have the right attitude, the good attitude, to serve people”. In addressing the senior Command, the head of the Methodist Church said there were many interpretations of leadership, the gist of which required humility and leading by example. “Humble yourselves and you will be rewarded. Ask what is necessary, what is relevant and appropriate.
Intentions, priorities, when following the master or leader. At times we are hungry for power, vying for leadership, for promotion, to promote to another level by hook or by crook.
Hard work will always be rewarded and those who deserve the position will be given it”. As the service was also the induction of the new Force Chaplain, Rev. Dr Turagavou emphasized his role as a spiritual counsellor to all members of the organization. “
I am here to remind you that you are a church minister first and not a police officer. Your chaplain is here among you, he is here to serve you. You will see the ups and downs, the lefts and the rights, you will be challenged, be firm and be strong, do what is good for the betterment of the nation”.
Following the church service, the Acting Commissioner’s one-year anniversary of his appointment was also commemorated.
