Police Touch Rugby Campaign Overview

The Fiji Police Touch Rugby team presented an overview of their 2023 campaign and their efforts towards strengthening community partnerships through sports to the Acting Commissioner of Police Sakeo Ganivatu this morning.

Presenting the overview of the team’s efforts was Sergeant Paul Darroch, who said the Police team composed of Police and civilian players recorded a number of successful outings in the 2022 season.

Established in 2011, the Police Touch Rugby side has participated in various local tournaments and has set its sights on expanding their participation to its regional law enforcement partners.

Sergeant Darroch said in 2022 that the team participated in the Suva Business House Competition, Gladiator Touch Rugby Competition, Community Cup, and Fijian Cup business house competitions.

He said a highlight for the small team was their ability to organize a friendly forces touch competition with the Republic Of Fiji Navy at the Nasova Grounds.

Sergeant Darroch said the intent of forming a team with civilian players is to strengthen community relations, where they aim to conduct awareness sessions with their opposing team after any match.

The Acting Commissioner of Police Sakeo Ganivatu said while considered a minor sport, touch rugby is the foundation of where many of Fijian rugby greats had started their love of the game, as everyone from a young age would have played touch rugby as a leisure sport.

A/CP Ganivatu thanked the team for their commitment to advocating the Duavata Community Policing initiative in the sport of touch rugby.

A/CP Ganivatu said Police officers participate in various sports as it is a popular and easy platform to advocate community policing initiatives.

He assured the team of the organisation's support for their 2023 campaign.
