The Fiji Police Force is once again reminding parents and guardians of the importance of supervision.
Chief Operations Officer (COO) Acting Assistant Commissioner of Police (A/ACP) Livai Driu stresses that with another public holiday today and with the social activities planned, the supervision of children must be prioritized at all times.
The reminder follows two incidents involving young children. Yesterday, a 13-year old student was admitted at the Sigatoka Hospital after she slipped and fell about 6m from a waterfall.
The victim was trying to take a picture on top of the Qwali waterfall when the incident occurred.
She is currently admitted in stable condition.
A/ACP Driu said in another unfortunate incident involving a child which occurred on the 22nd of December but was only reported to Police on the 24th of December, a 3-year old child passed away at the Lautoka Hospital from injuries sustained after he was trapped under a rolling steel gate.
The victim whilst waiting for his mother was climbing the steel gate when it fell on him.
He was rushed to the Lautoka Hospital where he was admitted until the time of his unfortunate death on Christmas eve.
A/ACP Driu said the death was unfortunate and could have been avoided.
He has called on parents and guardians to be alert of their children’s activities as they could get caught up in things unaware of the consequences and threats to their safety.
