Exchange Forum on Public Security


Members of Fiji's Chinese Community and the Fiji Police Force were able to discuss ways of strengthening cooperation and security of its members at an Exchange Forum on Public Security in Suva this morning.

The Forum was held in partnership with the Fiji Police Force, the Embassy of the People's Republic of China in Fiji, the Chinese community in Suva and the Overseas Chinese Service Centre in Fiji.

China's Ambassador to Fiji His Excellency Qian Bo said the Forum was an opportunity to network and address concerns raised by members of Fiji's Chinese community.

"The Chinese Embassy will continue supporting our Chinese nationals in Fiji to live with all ethcnic groups in harmony and forge a better life and brighter future.

Ensuring the safety of Chinese citizens and institutions in Fiji is always one of the key responsibilities of the Embassy''.

"Like the previous years, public security problems such as robberies tend to increase during Festivities and some Chinese nationals and enterprises have suffered severe economic loss, and expressed worries about increasing threats to their personal security".

Ambassador Bo said the meeting was a good opportunity to dialogue with the Fiji Police Force and assured the Commissioner of Police Brigadier General Sitiveni Qiliho of his Government's continued support in strengthening cooperation on security issues.

The Commissioner of Police Brigadier General Qiliho appreciated the feedback and frank discussions held and acknowledged the areas of improvements needed in service delivery.

He said that as the organisation responsible for the maintenance of law and order, the Fiji Police Force takes all concerns raised on service delivery seriously as prosperity of the nation is dependent on safety and security.

"We acknowledge and share the concerns raised in as far as the investigations and service delivery and we hope that this Forum will assist us in strengthening our working relations for the increased sense of security that we all desire".

"We value the Chinese community's contribution to Fiji's economy and we understand that the issues raised by your members need to be addressed and I encourage us all to communicate issues of concern so they can be addressed immediately".

The Chief of Intelligence and Investigations ACP Surend Sami and senior Directors were also present.
