Speeding Kills

With the anticipation of containment borders on Viti Levu opening up, the Fiji Police Force is requesting road users to be vigilant and take all necessary precautionary measures and to keep in mind that COVID-19 safe measures are still in place.

Speeding and failure to wear a seat belt recorded the most number of bookings from the 1st of January to the 31st of August, 2021.

Despite the repeated warnings and advisories, speeding continues to be a concern with 22,942 drivers booked during the 8-month reporting period.

Speeding kills and is a globally known fact.

Thirteen fatal accidents have been recorded so far this year, of which seven were as a result of speeding.

This is why we continue to ask road users to be careful and vigilant at all times.

Other bookings include failure to wear a seat belt which accounted for 1,787 bookings, careless driving accounted for 1,432 bookings while 259 drivers were charged for drunk and drive.

We understand that many have made plans to travel this week once borders open up, and we reiterate the need to be safe and Fijians are also reminded that COVID-19 safe measures are still in place.

We plead with all road users to be vigilant and to plan your travel ahead of time to avoid rushing and speeding.
