The Office of the Director of Public Prosecutions has sanctioned the charges against five (5) police officers for their alleged involvement in an assault and extortion case against a Nasinu businessman.
The five have all been charged with one count of assault causing actual bodily harm.
Four (4) of the officers face an additional charge of Theft and Wrongful Confinement.
Two (2) officers face a third count of Possession of Property suspected of being Proceeds of Crime.
All five officers will be produced at the Suva Magistrates Court today.
The Commissioner of Police Rusiate Tudravu reiterates the transparent process in the conduct of investigations against police officers upon the receipt of an official complaint, whereby independent legal advice will be sought from the Office of the Director of Public Prosecutions.
Commissioner Tudravu maintains the organisation’s zero tolerance policy on officers engaged in corrupt practices, and through the conduct of an investigation, officers will face their fate in a court of law, as such practices erode public trust and confidence.
All five Police officers are on interdiction.
