do not leave your car keys unattended

Police are urging vehicle owners not to leave their cars unattended with the keys in the ignition.

There are two reports received by Police where suspects stole vehicles after finding the keys in the ignition.

The Assistant Commissioner of Police Operations (ACPO) Livai Driu said the last incident in Suva had two children sitting in the back seat.

Another case had the stolen vehicle used in a robbery. "Opportunists have no regard for anyone when they are intent on committing a crime, and this also applies to victim’s families if they are also in a vehicle," said ACP Driu.

He said that Police have observed a concerning trend regarding vehicle security, as many drivers are neglecting to remove their keys from the ignition.

"This practice not only increases the risk of theft but also places a strain on our resources as we work to recover stolen vehicles."

He said once a report is received, checkpoints will be erected, and alerts are sent to all Police vehicles and stations with the intent of ensuring the vehicle is not used in another act of crime.

He adds that stolen vehicles can be misused for illegal activities, posing further risks to public safety.

"We are anticipating a lot of movements in the next few days as people will be doing their back to school shopping and children returning home from holidays.

Let's continue to be on the lookout for each other."
