5 year old washed away by strong currents

A 5-year-old girl of Naituvatuvavatu village, Wainibuka was washed away by strong river currents.

She was crossing the Waisomi river with seven other children and her 32-year- old aunt after returning from picking edible lady fern when the incident happened.

The matter was reported to Police by the Turaga ni koro of Naituvatuvavatu village.

Assistant Commissioner of Police Operations (ACPO) Livai Driu said three Police Officers were deployed to assist in the search yesterday.

"The search had to be called off because it was dark and also the unfavorable weather.

Search for the 5-year-old will continue today," said ACP Driu.

He said parental supervision is important, especially during this time of the year.

"Parents need to be more responsible and vigilant on children during this school break.

They need to spend more time with their children and not at gatherings," said ACP Driu.
