The Fiji Police Force has reaffirmed it’s position and support towards regional policing efforts. The Acting Commissioner of Police Sakeo Raikaci issued this statement whilst officiating the opening of the Pacific Islands Chiefs of Police’s Pacific Community for Law Enforcement Cooperation (PCLEC) three day Regional Meeting hosted by Fiji this morning.
The Pacific Community for Law Enforcement Cooperation (PCLEC) is a regional delivery mechanism that supports capability development in law enforcement priority areas as directed by the Pacific Islands Chiefs of Police (PICP).
Capabilities are developed via a ‘by the Pacific, for the Pacific’ approach. “As you know, we have under our International Relations Unit, a Fiji PCLEC chapter, where officers have been seconded to ensure initiative under the PCLEC umbrella are rolled out as planned,” said Acting Commissioner Raikaci.
The Acting Commissioner said support for pacific policing is at an all time high with more opportunities opening up, with the recent endorsement by Pacific Island Leaders Forum leaders of the Pacific Policing Initiative, commending the work done by the Pacific Islands Chief of Police in this regard to name a few.
“The Project Blue Pacific is another exciting chapter for us, whereby regional and domestic security interests are being consolidated through INTERPOL and the PICP, aimed at enhancing capacity building among member countries.”
Through PCLEC, officers from Fiji have been seconded to the Australian Federal Police, facilitated assistance to the Solomon General Elections, assistance to the Samoa Police providing 35 Police Officers for the Commonwealth Heads of Government Meeting (CHOGM).
The PCLEC Regional meeting is currently underway at the Sheraton Resort with 19 participants from American Samoa, Commonwealth of the Northern Mariana Islands (CNMI), Cook Islands, French Polynesia, Federated State of Micronesia (FSM), Guam, Kiribati, Nauru, New Caledonia, New Zealand, Palau, Samoa, Solomon Islands, Tokelau, Tonga, Tuvalu, Vanuatu, Australia and Fiji.
