TIE A YELLOW RIBBON - And Give A Chance
The first time ever in the History of Fiji- Inmates took to the streets and performed for the Fijian public.
It was the Yellow Ribbon day. And family members of those that are doing time- came out in numbers to March and help raise awareness of ‘Giving Inmates a second chance’.
There were tears as Inmates had a chat with Family members out in Sukuna Park. The display that showed off the skills of those that needed our attention.
Designed and facilitated by the Prisons department and supported by Organizations that come under the same Ministry- the Yellow Ribbon day was a success.
The Yellow Ribbon March began at the Albert Park with the Joint RFMF and FPF Band leading the fort with melodious tunes.
It wasn’t long before the streets of Suva spilled over with the members of the public attending the day’s functions and entertainments at Sukuna Park.
The theme- ‘ Give a Second Chance’ reminds society of the bearer that has lingered on with those that have come out of Prison and the Public. It encourages the common person to take another look and give someone the chance to start over.
In addressing members of the Public this afternoon- Commissioner Prisons- Col. Iowane Naivularua says- an obstacle facing the Prisons department is not the rehabilitation of Prisoners but the question is- ‘ To whom do they release the reformed Inmate to and what would the reception of the community be?”
Col. Naivalurua also encouraged members of the Public to be more receptive towards a released inmate.
Also present at the occasion was Fiji’s Interim Prime Minister- Commodore Frank Bainimarama, Interim Minister For Justice- Aiyaz Sayed Khaiyum, Lord Mayor Suva, His lordship Peni Volavola, his Deputy Cr. Josefa Gavidi and Commissioner of Police- Commodore Esala Teleni.
