Officer in Charge of the Dog Section, Assistant Superintendent of Police (ASP), Jone Yalimaiwai was recently on a tour in the Northern Division in a bid to decentralize the Police Dog Section to the various regions across the nation.
Decentralization processes have already begun in the west where three dog handlers are currently being trained and new sites are now being located around the four divisions as possible sites for dog kernels.
The northern division currently has a police dog named Max an Australian-born canine who has become a due to his feats in assisting police during operations around Vanua Levu.
A supplement of police dogs is expected as part of the Dog Section decentralization with three dogs in Labasa, two for Taveuni Police Station, one for Savusavu Police station and one for Nabouwalu Police Station. The project is earmarked to begin after the second quarter.Dog handlers will be drawn from within the four divisions and the master dog trainer will be dispatched to the four divisions to interview successful candidates for the post and hold training sessions.
