Today was another hot day in the little Northern Town of Labasa and a familiar sight along the Fiji Sugar Corporation road is the line of sugar cane Lorries parked in long queues for the mill as it is cane crushing season again for the town.

The cane crushing season for the little town of Labasa meant one thing in the line of duties of Police, an influx of people drifting in from villages across Vanualevu as seasonal cane laborers.

Cane cutting season has also seen an influx in the number of offences committed in the Labasa town ranging from sexual offences to burglary and cases of theft.

Cane crushing began on Tuesday 22/06/10 and sugarcane Lorries and tractors are a familiar site along the mill waiting for their turn to load their canes into the crusher.
