The 2012 Fiji Police Force Commissioners cup challenge kicked off with a major upset at the Fiji Police Nasova grounds yesterday.
Defending champions Ready Action Unit suffered the shock of their life when they were beaten by a low profiled Eastern division.
The officers from the Eastern Division put all on the line in a gutsy game against the favorites.
The game started on a high note by the officers based in Nasinu with some early chances to notch some scores but failed to do so due to handling errors.
It took 25 minutes in the first half for the roaring fans to see the first point of the game which came through the boots of Waisele Dau through a 25meter penalty kick.
Later in the 35th minute Dau struck gold again, when he scored a converted try to increase Eastern's lead to 10 points.
However not willing to play a catch up game in the second half the Ready Action Unit team's Maika Tabua put his team on the score board just seconds before half time, as the two teams went for a breather with Eastern leading RAU by 10 points to 5.
As the second half stared the game turned more physical and thus the tempers started to flow.
This resulted in the referee reaching into his pockets for two yellow cards for both sides.
As the game continued the officers from the Eastern division dominated possession and stayed in RAU territory.
In the 21st minute they were rewarded for their effort when Amani Bosenawai kicked a penalty to increase Eastern's lead by 13 over RAU.
As the game was approaching its dying stages the defending champions did not give up as they notched another 3 points through a penalty by Simione Taminisau.
However it was too little too late as the Eastern Division came out winners after beating defending champions RAU 13 – 8, ensuring the Commissioner's Cup travelled across the Rewa River to its new home.
The day ended with the presentation of the Commissioner's Cup trophy by Deputy Commissioner of Police, Iskeli Ligairi.
